Players constantly mix up float and pattern — and it costs them real money. Here's the honest breakdown of what each one actually does, and when paying up for either is worth it.

If you've spent more than a few hours browsing CSFloat or Skinport, you've probably seen listings where two skins look nearly identical but one costs three times as much. Sometimes the price difference is justified. Often it isn't. The reason people overpay — or underpay and miss something special — almost always comes down to confusing float and pattern.

These are two completely separate variables. They do different things. They matter on different skins. And knowing which one to care about on a given skin is one of the highest-value pieces of knowledge you can have as a buyer.

Float is a number between 0.0000 and 1.0000 that represents how "worn" a skin is. It's baked into the item permanently when it drops or is unboxed — it never changes.

The game uses float to determine wear tier (the label you see), and also to control the exact visual state of the skin's texture:

  • Factory New: 0.00 – 0.07
  • Minimal Wear: 0.07 – 0.15
  • Field-Tested: 0.15 – 0.38
  • Well-Worn: 0.38 – 0.45
  • Battle-Scarred: 0.45 – 1.00

Those ranges aren't universal — each skin has its own minimum and maximum possible float, so not every skin can be Factory New or Battle-Scarred. But within those ranges, float drives the scratches, scuffs, and wear marks you see on the model.

A 0.01 float FN and a 0.069 float FN are both Factory New in terms of label, but they can look visibly different. On some skins that difference is minor. On others — particularly skins with wear that progressively eats into the design — it matters enormously.

When Float Actually Changes the Look

Not every skin reacts dramatically to float. Skins where float matters most tend to share one characteristic: the wear texture overlaps with the actual design. Scratches appear on the artwork, not just the handle or frame.

Good examples where float is genuinely important:

  • AK-47 | Vulcan — At lower floats, the geometric design stays sharp. Higher FT floats develop visible scratches across the face of the skin.
  • M4A4 | Howl — The wolf face degrades visibly as float rises. A low float FN looks dramatically cleaner than a 0.06.
  • AWP | Asiimov — The orange-and-white design starts showing significant wear as you approach the BS threshold. Low float BS Asiimovs are a well-known niche.
  • AK-47 | Fire Serpent — The serpent's body gets heavily worn at higher floats, which is why low-float FT copies carry a real premium.

On skins with clean, solid-color designs or designs printed only on certain panels, float differences are often cosmetically trivial inside the same wear tier.

When Paying Up for Float Is a Waste

The most common float overpay trap: buying a low float Field-Tested at a premium when a high float Minimal Wear looks nearly identical and costs significantly less. This happens constantly with skins where the wear texture is subtle. Always pull both up side by side on CSFloat's preview before committing.

Also watch out for paying for float below what's necessary for it to matter. A 0.001 AK-47 | Redline costs more than a 0.03, but the visual difference is nearly nonexistent — the design doesn't have fine detail that rewards a 0.001 float. That premium is largely speculative floor-seeking, not visual value.

What Pattern Actually Is

Pattern is an integer — commonly called a pattern index or seed — ranging from 0 to 999. When the game applies a skin's texture to a weapon model, the pattern index determines how that texture is positioned, scaled, and oriented on the model.

For most skins, this doesn't matter at all. A texture that tiles uniformly or fills the whole model looks the same at pattern 1 and pattern 999.

But for skins where the texture has meaningful variation — a gradient, a specific color zone, a gem-like crystalline area — the pattern index determines which part of that texture lands on the visible faces of the weapon. That's where pattern becomes everything.

The Skins Where Pattern Is the Whole Game

Case Hardened (AK-47, Five-SevenStar, Karambit, etc.) The Case Hardened texture is a field of blue, gold, and purple tones. The pattern index determines how much blue lands on the top flat of the receiver (AK) or the playside of the blade (knives). High-blue patterns — especially full blue tops — are among the most valuable patterns in CS2. The difference between a "trash" pattern and a top-tier blue gem can be enormous in value, even at the same float and wear.

Fade (Karambit, Butterfly, M9, etc.) Fade skins pull from a gradient texture that goes from yellow through orange into purple. The pattern index determines the fade percentage — how deep into the purple/violet end of the gradient the visible blade surface reaches. A 100% fade (maximum purple) consistently trades at a premium over an 85% or 90% fade. On popular knives, this gap can be substantial.

Marble Fade (knives) The Marble Fade texture blends red, blue, and yellow. Certain pattern indices land the blue on the blade's spine or tip in a way that earns the nickname "Fire and Ice" (heavy red and blue, minimal yellow) or "Tricolor" (all three colors visible). These specific patterns are well-documented and command documented premiums. A standard Marble Fade and a Fire and Ice Marble Fade at the same float are not in the same market.

Crimson Web (knives) The web pattern on Crimson Web skins shifts based on pattern index. Collectors specifically seek centered webs — single large web centered on the blade face — versus cluttered or off-center web placements. The centered web premium is real and well-established.

Tiger Tooth / Doppler Phases Doppler (knives) have phase variants — Phase 1 through 4, Ruby, Sapphire, Black Pearl — that are actually determined by a combination of finish style and, effectively, pattern. Sapphires and Rubies are specific cases where the pattern-equivalent determines the entire color of the skin.

When Pattern Doesn't Matter

The flip side: the vast majority of skins have patterns that are visually indistinguishable. An AK-47 | Asiimov at pattern 42 and pattern 801 looks identical. The texture tiles uniformly across the weapon. Paying attention to pattern on these skins is wasted energy — the variable simply doesn't produce meaningful visual variation.

If someone is selling a "rare pattern" on a skin that doesn't have well-documented pattern variation (no fade gradient, no gem zones, no web centering), treat that claim skeptically. Check community resources — pattern documentation tends to be thorough for skins where it genuinely matters.

Here's where it gets interesting: on some skins, both variables matter independently, and you're effectively buying across two axes.

Take the Karambit | Fade. Float affects how clean the blade looks — scratches on the edge, scuffs on the flat. Pattern affects what fade percentage you get. A high fade percentage at a middling float and a low fade percentage at a pristine float are different propositions, and different buyers will prioritize differently. Neither is objectively "better" — it depends what you're optimizing for.

Similarly, AK-47 | Case Hardened collectors often care about both. A blue gem pattern at a high float still has the blue gem pattern, but the surface may show wear. Top-tier copies that check both boxes — documented high-blue pattern and clean float — carry combined premiums.

The practical takeaway: decide what you're actually buying before you look at price. Are you buying the cleanness of the metal? Float is your variable. Are you buying a specific color distribution? Pattern is your variable. Don't let a seller package both and charge for both when you only care about one.

A Practical Buying Framework

Before pulling the trigger on any skin, run through this mental checklist:

Step 1 — Does this skin have meaningful float sensitivity? Does the wear texture visibly degrade the design, or does wear only hit the grip and frame? If the design stays largely intact across float ranges, you don't need to overpay for the lowest float in the tier.

Step 2 — Does this skin have documented pattern variation? Fade percentage? Case Hardened gem zones? Crimson Web centering? Marble Fade variants? If yes, look up the community pattern databases (sites like CSFloat's pattern viewer or community-maintained spreadsheets) before evaluating any listing.

Step 3 — What is the seller actually pricing? Is the premium for float, for pattern, or for both? A low float with a standard pattern should not cost the same as a documented top-tier pattern at average float. Make sure you know which premium you're actually paying for.

Step 4 — Compare cross-wear-tier, not just within tier. A 0.14 MW and a 0.16 FT often look nearly identical on the inspect model. The MW commands a higher price by label, but if the design doesn't show visible wear at 0.16, you're paying a pure label premium. Use inspect previews ruthlessly.

It's worth being honest that float and pattern matter differently depending on why you own skins.

If you're buying skins to use in-game, you're looking at your weapon for a few seconds per round at angles that often obscure fine detail. The visual difference between a 0.01 and a 0.06 Factory New is going to be nearly invisible in gameplay. A pattern premium for a marginal fade percentage improvement similarly yields almost no in-game value. Play-focused buyers should prioritize wear tier and general design, then stop.

If you're buying for collection, investment, or trade-up potential, then float and pattern are exactly the right things to study. The premium items in any skin category tend to check meaningful boxes on both axes — and that knowledge is the difference between buying something special and overpaying for something ordinary.
