Placement is where most crafts quietly fall apart. Before you apply a sticker you can never fully undo, here's exactly how the four slots, rotation, and weapon geometry work together — and which spots are worth fighting for.

Placement Is the Craft

You can spend thousands on a Katowice foil and still end up with something that looks like a sticker slapped on sideways by someone in a hurry. The sticker itself is only half the equation. Where it lands, how it sits relative to the weapon's geometry, and how it interacts with the skin's visual noise — that's what separates a craft people screenshot from one people quietly skip in a trade offer.

The bad news: once you apply a sticker, it's there. Scraping degrades it in stages — you can go from pristine to worn to nearly invisible, but you can never cleanly remove it. You also can't reposition it after the fact. This is a one-shot decision on every slot.

The good news: the rules aren't mysterious. Once you understand the mechanics, most placement mistakes become avoidable.

Every weapon in CS2 supports up to four sticker slots, but those slots are not created equal. Their positions are baked into the weapon model, and the exact location varies dramatically from gun to gun.

Here's what each slot controls:

  • Position along the weapon: Slots are placed at fixed points on the mesh — usually across the body of the weapon, stock, or barrel area, depending on the model.
  • Rotation: When you apply a sticker in-game, you get a rotation dial. This lets you spin the sticker on its axis within the slot. It does not let you move it laterally or change its depth.
  • Scale: You cannot resize a sticker. The size is determined by the slot's surface area and the weapon's UV mapping.
  • Wear: Scraping degrades the sticker's appearance permanently. The wear is applied in increments each time you scrape, and it shows as fading and visual damage to the sticker image.

The key mechanic most players miss: rotation is your only real creative variable. You can't reposition a sticker to the left or right within a slot. If a slot sits over a rivet, that rivet is behind your sticker no matter what. All you control is the angle.

This makes slot selection — which of the four positions you use — the highest-stakes decision in a craft.


The Geometry Problem: Why Some Slots Are Traps

Weapon skins are painted onto a UV-unwrapped 3D model. When a skin has a busy pattern — lots of color variation, large design elements, logos — a sticker in the wrong slot disappears into the noise or gets visually cut by a seam or an edge.

A few principles that hold across most weapons:

Flat, wide surfaces are money. The broader and flatter the underlying geometry at a given slot, the more the sticker renders cleanly without appearing to wrap or distort. On rifles, the magazine well area and the flat side panel of the receiver tend to sit best.

Avoid seams and overlapping geometry. If a slot sits right at a model seam or where two parts of the weapon meet (e.g., where the stock joins the receiver), the sticker image can appear to split or warp slightly depending on the viewing angle.

The skin's base color matters more than you think. A white or bright sticker on a dark, high-contrast skin background reads clearly. The same sticker on a chaotic, multi-color skin — say, a Case Hardened or a Marble Fade — can get visually eaten alive. The sticker and skin need enough contrast to read as two separate layers.


Money Spots: Weapon-by-Weapon

These are the slots that the craft community has converged on through years of trial and error. They're not official — they're consensus positions earned by producing good-looking results consistently.

AK-47

The AK's wood body is one of the best canvases in the game. Slot 3 (approximately mid-body, left panel) is the universally respected placement — it's flat, wide, and catches light well in the inspect animation. Slot 4 near the stock can work for a secondary sticker to frame a craft, but slot 1 (near the barrel/gas tube area) tends to be avoided because the geometry curves and makes stickers look tilted even when they're straight.

M4A4

The M4A4 has a cleaner profile than the AK for sticker work. Slot 3 again tends to be the showcase position. The flat panel on the left side of the receiver is where high-value foils and holographics get placed to maximize the shine animation during inspect. Slots 1 and 2 are acceptable for supporting stickers but rarely worth featuring expensive pieces there.

AWP

The AWP is the most distinctive craft weapon in the game, and its large, flat body panels make it unusually forgiving. Slots 2 and 3 span a long, relatively flat surface on the scope body and receiver — this is why AWP crafts with two matching stickers side-by-side look so clean. The "double sticker" composition works on the AWP in a way it rarely does on rifles. Slot 1 near the barrel is generally wasted space.

M4A1-S

The M4A1-S has a suppressor that makes slot positioning feel different from its sibling. The silencer itself is considered poor real estate — stickers there look decorative in an unflattering way, and they're partially obscured from certain inspect angles. Focus on the body slots, with slot 3 as the primary.

USP-S

Pistols have compressed slot spacing, which makes placement errors more obvious. On the USP-S, the most valuable spot is the wide area of the slide — a single, well-placed sticker centered there reads far better than trying to fill multiple slots and making it look cluttered.

Because rotation is the only variable you control at apply time, it deserves serious attention. Here's what rotation affects in practice:

Alignment with weapon lines. Most weapon models have strong horizontal lines — barrel, receiver edges, stock rails. Aligning a sticker's horizontal axis with those lines makes the sticker look intentional. Even a slight tilt can make a craft look amateur, like a crooked picture frame.

Logo orientation. A sticker with text or a directional logo (team names, tournament logos, character-based stickers) almost always looks best when that text is legible right-side-up in the standard inspect view. There are exceptions — some crafters tilt logos deliberately for effect — but if you're uncertain, readable upright is the safe default.

Matching multiple stickers. If you're placing two stickers of the same design in adjacent slots (a "double" or "quad" craft), the rotation values need to match exactly or the pair will look misaligned. This sounds obvious until you're in the apply screen trying to eyeball two rotations independently.

Foil and holo stickers respond to angle. The shine animation on foil and holographic stickers activates as you move through the inspect. Rotation affects which movement direction triggers the most visible shimmer. Generally, keeping foils at standard orientation means the shine peaks at the moments players are most likely to notice it.


Good Craft vs. Bad Craft: What the Difference Actually Looks Like

Let's make this concrete with some comparison thinking:

Bad placement scenario: A Katowice 2014 foil placed in slot 1 on an AK-47. The slot sits near the curved upper handguard. The sticker appears to tilt and partially wrap the geometry. The foil's shine animation is partially lost because the surface isn't reading flat. You've put a high-value sticker in a position where the weapon actively fights you.

Good placement scenario: The same sticker in slot 3 on an AK-47 Wood or AK-47 Case Hardened. Flat surface, centered inspect view, shine fires cleanly. The sticker looks large and intentional. The background skin color is dark enough to frame the sticker rather than compete with it.

Bad placement scenario: Applying a round, symmetric sticker in slot 2 on an AWP at a 45-degree tilt because it seemed creative. In motion during inspect, it reads as a mistake, not a design choice, because it fights the horizontal language of the weapon's body.

Good placement scenario: Two matching stickers in slots 2 and 3 on an AWP, both at 0-degree rotation, aligned to the scope and receiver line. The symmetry feels deliberate and clean.


The Scrape Risk Calculation

Some crafters buy stickers with the intent to scrape them to a specific wear level for aesthetic reasons — a lightly scraped sticker can look vintage and intentional, especially on a worn skin. But this is a gamble with no undo.

The scrape increments aren't perfectly controllable. Each scrape applies a random-ish amount of wear within a range. You might hit the look you want in two scrapes or overshoot it completely. If you're planning to scrape, practice with a cheap copy of the sticker on a throwaway skin first — not on the actual craft.

More importantly: scraping doesn't fix bad placement. A worn sticker in a bad slot is still a sticker in a bad slot.

  • Rotation is your only in-slot variable. Use it to align with weapon geometry, not fight it.
  • Slot 3 is the default money spot on most rifles. Learn the exceptions for your specific weapon.

  • You can't un-apply. Test first, apply once.

Placement is unglamorous craft knowledge — it doesn't have the excitement of chasing a float or finding a perfect pattern index. But it's the thing that makes everything else either land or fall apart. Get it right.
